Company History

Razor Edge Systems is the trusted name for those who rely on knives, blades and sharp edges. For half a century, our family-owned business has reached many milestones – and we’re proud to share a few with you today:

1960s

During the Korean War, army barber John Juranitch began researching the cutting edge and how to keep it sharp — thus Razor Edge Systems was born in Milwaukee, WI in the 1960s. Following years of research, Juranitch patented this knife clamping guide and, along with his wife Rosemary, began to set the standard for what “sharp” really means when it comes to edges. Early on, their five children became an integral part of the family business — assembling products and equipment, also working tradeshows. For the next 20 years, the family survived selling sharpening kits at sport and archery shows across the U.S. — building a trusted reputation for Razor Edge Systems.

1970s

During sport shows, daughters JoAnn and Mary challenged barbers to shaving contests — knife versus straight razor. The Juranitch’s were clear winners, though tied once after a judge felt bad for our opponent. About this time, the Juranitch family moved to a farmstead in Ely, MN. Our earliest knife sharpening machines were manufactured in this old garage. In the late 1970s, Razor Edge Systems developed the first central knife sharpening system, revolutionizing the meat processing industry. It impacted employee health, morale and safety as well as customer yield, production and profit.

1980s

In 1985, we patented The Mousetrap® Steel, giving novice butchers the ability to keep knives as sharp, or sharper, than seasoned professional butchers. To market Razor Edge Systems, John earned a Guinness World Record for sharpening and shaving with axe in the 1980s. Later, his son Joe beat his time. They’d host shaving events like these at tradeshows for years to come.

1990s - Today

Since then, we’ve worked to ensure we only develop the best sharpening products and equipment possible. Thanks to our commitment to quality workmanship and product performance, Razor Edge Systems has become the most well-known and respected name in the meat processing industry. For the past 50 years, we’ve placed importance on positive business ethics — remaining dedicated to providing unparalleled service to our customers. Today, John and Rosemary’s son, Joe Juranitch, and daughter, Mary Graves, run the business, alongside Mary’s husband, Dan Graves.
